History of Present Illness (HPI)

A 47-year-old man presents with complaints of 1 week of epigastric abdominal pain followed by multiple episodes of emesis in the last 2 days. Emesis initially contained a spoonful of blood, but an hour ago he threw up a bowl full, which prompted him to present to the emergency department. He also endorses fatigue, lightheadedness and an episode of black stool this morning. He reports occasional NSAID use.
Past medical and social history is notable for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and cirrhosis. He has no notable surgical history.
